A meta-model is a database design. Therefore, before starting on the Design View, you should design your meta-model. It is also good sense to document the meta-model as time goes on so data does not get duplicated and the database is optimised for your modeling and reporting purposes.
Knowing your meta-model is also fundamental for effective use of Communicator for Word.
One way of designing a meta-model is to use Casewise itself to draw an "Entity Relationship Diagram". This, too, can be published and used as a kind of Help file; the example below is the meta-model for this "Kybernetica Services Model".
When designing a meta-model, I find it is useful to design it iteratively using rapid prototyping. For example, set up the object types and associations, add some sample or made-up data, then publish it to test the navigation and whether the data presented to the user is what they were expecting.
